THE WITHDRAWING STANCE // 4's ∙ 5's ∙ 9's
There are three basic "Centers of Intelligence" that allow us to interact with the world:
THINKING
FEELING
DOING
Each of the Enneagram Types put these centers into three categories:
DOMINANT (or PREFERRED)
SUPPORTING
REPRESSED
(It's like a three-layered cake! We have all three, but we each "layer" them differently.) Unfortunately, we tend to view life through our preferred "lense" and neglect the other two, causing us to miss out on developing the other two centers!
4's, 5's and 9's tend to focus on doing what is comfortable rather than what needs to be done. Instead they move away or inside themselves by FEELING & THINKING, not doing. Therefore, they are "DOING REPRESSED."
4's - HOW you see affects your productivity (you tend to see in textures, color, depth, what something can be, etc) and this can be a distraction from getting the things done that actually need to get done.
5's - you have measured amount of energy and tend to take too much time and energy over-planning (you plan to do vs. actually doing!)
9's - you know what you need to do, but often don't get done what actually NEEDS to get done, tending to do things out of order or having trouble staying on task. Not every one in this stance is introverted, but what they have in common is a lack of confidence in connecting with the world. They are able to overcome this lack in various areas while still feeling hesitant or insecure in many hidden areas. They prefer to maintain their distance and comfort by looking within and depending on themselves for what they need, rather than looking to others.
These numbers don't think about what they could do and dismiss it, but rather, what they could do about the situation never crosses their minds! They live inside themselves as if it were life in the real world, which can cause them to feel isolated from others and life. They are often dissatisfied with their lives because they do not know how to act on their own behalf. They also have difficulty moving their ideas through to completion. When they repress the ability to affect the world, a strength that comes with the doing center, they have to look within to survive.
All three types focus on the past (orientation to time) because the doing center isn’t needed there.
4's - ruminate on relationships, conversations, and all that is missing from their lives.
5's - think about information they have already gathered and use it develop their own idea systems.
9's - think about the way their lives were, both good and bad, and feel powerless to repair the bad or improve the good.
So how do 4's, 5's and 9's develop their repressed doing center?!!!
