THE WITHDRAWING STANCE // Type 5
WITHDRAWING STANCE (4's, 5's & 9's) are oriented to the past, what is comfortable and within themselves.
Type Fives put the Centers of Intelligence into three categories:
THINKING (dominant)
FEELING (supportive)
DOING (repressed)
Fives observe the world around them so that they can gather information. All of this observing and study is an attempt to learn something that will make them competent. This strategy is far less effective than they think it is. While fives observe, life passes them by. They observe to decide where to place their energy. Ironically, all of this watching, weighing, thinking, and energy-counting requires much of this precious energy.
All of this thinking and planning takes up so much energy that Fives end up not actually doing what they planned to do. Therefore your planning and thinking tends to not lead to productive doing. This is why they are "Doing Repressed."
Another way that Fives spend their energy instead of doing is by "hoarding." They tend to believe the lie that "they are what they have" which compels them to mental activity and problem solving. They think "I am what I have; I have all the answers."
Each five seeks to retain and possess something that is unique to them. It could be time, energy, money, objects, knowledge, or status. If you’re a five, you probably withhold feelings and conversation. While "hoarding," you are also failing to be present in the moment. You are absent because you are receiving information through your head, and looking for what interests you. Unfortunately, a lot of life can seem boring and uninteresting.
Fives also tend to allow their fears to keep them from productively doing. Many times, they are afraid of the unknown or not having the answers. They tend to detach from the things they fear, turning to cynicism, sarcasm, and dry humor. But what Fives need to realize is that fear cannot be conquered in your head. These fears need to be named, then only by finding an inner peace and balance can you move past them!
Okay Fives...do not lose hope! Let's talk about some ways Fives can develop their Doing Center and become more balanced.

GROWTH POINTS FOR FIVES:
Plan less - Do More! so you can move to objectively thinking which is a gateway into DOING!
Observe yourself to see how you are spending your energy - name this pattern with as much specificity as you can, and understand that if you are hoarding or over thinking or over planning, you are spending your constantly-monitored energy instead of doing.
Be Present! Instead of receiving the world from your head, pay attention to and with your body.
Pay attention to your breathing and your body as you go through the day - at times, your head may feel heavy while your body feels light. Try to balance them until both feel heavy. This balancing builds a residual awareness level with your body that you can carry around throughout the day. Once you are grounded in your body, you can begin paying attention to people from this position. You will be more aware of your own feelings and the feelings of others in real time.
Get in touch with your FEARS! If you do this, you will no longer be constantly escaping to your head in an effort to solve them like some problem. Fear is not a problem to be solved. Instead, accept and befriend your fear.
Spend time daily in SILENCE - once you consent to silence (decide to make it a priority) and allow your mind to rest, you can get in touch with your inner peace, and realize you are accepted as you are and safe in the unknown, even if you don't have all the answers! Only silence can remedy the constant churning of questions and persistent noises in your mind!
Spouse or loved one of a Five: encourage and allow your Five to spend daily time alone in silence to quiet their minds. Make conversation less exhausting by being straightforward and to the point. Also encourage them that they are accepted and loved as they are, even if they don't have all the answers!
